Practices of agroforestry

Modern agroforestry falls into six main categories: alley cropping, forest gardens, woodland pasture, parkland, shelter belts and riparian buffers.

1. Alley cropping

Alley cropping, as its name suggests, combines vertical alleyways of tree crops with a horizontal area that is used for either grazing or a crop. This increases the yield from the total system, but the tree crops do not take up much space from the other areas. There are two main types of alley cropping: silvopastoral systems, where the trees are combined with animals, and silvoarable systems where the trees are combined with arable cropping areas.
